Boehringer Ingelheim reports positive linagliptin trial data

29th June 2010

Boehringer Ingelheim has published new clinical trial data at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions, highlighting the benefits of its diabetes drug linagliptin.

The pharmaceutical company trialled the drug in a 24-week phase III study which aimed to evaluate its efficacy both as a monotherapy and in combination with metformin or pioglitazone.

It was found that the treatment was able to provide statistically significant reductions in blood glucose as measured by haemoglobin in both applications, while also demonstrating a favourable safety profile.

In addition, linagliptin proved to demonstrate similar performance among patients with varying levels of mild and moderate renal impairment.

Dr Julio Rosenstock, director of Dallas Diabetes and Endocrine Center at Medical City, said the drug’s performance in the trial could have important repercussions for patients diagnosed with or at risk from renal complications.

Earlier this month, Boehringer Ingelheim was granted European approval for Mirapexin/Sifrol, a new combination treatment for Parkinson’s disease.
