Posted on 16/06/2010 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News Hospira has sponsored an international symposium discussing the way in which elderly patients are missing out on optimal haematology treatment.
The conference, which took place at the 15th Congress of the European Haematology Association in Barcelona, brought together global industry experts to discuss the issue.
It was suggested by the panel that older sufferers of haematological disorders - such as leukaemia, neutropenia and anaemia - are missing out on places in clinical trials due to an assumption they will be unable to tolerate aggressive treatment.
However, Professor Emili Montserrat of the University of Barcelona indicated that older people are in better condition now than in the past, adding that including them in clinical studies would allow for the creation of more tailored treatment options.
Dr Helen Phillips, Hospira's medical director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, added: "We support the inclusion of older people in clinical trials to ensure that treatments developed reflect and take into account the health and needs of older people."
Last month, Hospira held its 2010 annual shareholders' meeting, during which it expressed confidence in its future growth thanks to its ongoing efforts to optimise its business performance.Other news stories from 16/06/2010
