Posted on 12/05/2010 in Medical Company Product News Johnson and Johnson subsidiary Ethicon Endo-Surgery has announced the release of new surgical shears which allow deep access procedures to be conducted more safely.
The new Harmonic Focus Long Curved Shears use precise ultrasonic energy to dissect, grasp and coagulate in applications such as upper gastrointestinal and colorectal procedures.
This allows for a reduction in the risk of thermal damage to patients, while maintaining high levels of surgical efficiency.
Because the shears also provide a variety of important surgical functions to be performed without needing to switch instruments, use of the Harmonic Focus device can also help to save time.
Dr Christopher Sonnenday, assistant professor of surgery and of health management and policy at the University of Michigan, said: "A device that has the look and feel of traditional surgical tools but brings the benefits of advanced energy will be an important instrument for many surgeons."
Last month, Johnson and Johnson published its financial report for the first quarter of 2010, revealing that sales of medical devices from subsidiaries such as Ethicon increased by 12.5 per cent year-on-year.Other news stories from 12/05/2010
