Posted on 05/05/2010 in Medical Company Product News Smith and Nephew has highlighted results from a new study which demonstrates the safety of its Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) system.
The medical device company published data at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting from a trial which monitored the effectiveness of systems such as the BHR hip among 3,400 hip resurfacing patients.
It was found that 99.9 per cent of those studied had not encountered implant failure due to metal wear debris three years after surgery, with the BHR system the most commonly used device in the trial.
This follows on from previous studies published in the last few years by the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Oswestry Outcomes Centre and the Australian Registry, which also supported the safety of the device.
Joseph DeVivo, president of orthopaedics for Smith and Nephew, said: "Not only does [the BHR hip] have the longest track record of any resurfacing device, but the most esteemed medical literature shows it outlasts other implants."
