Posted on 12/04/2010 in Scientific Mast Group has launched a new assay-based testing kit for the detection of the sexually-transmitted herpes simplex virus (HSV).
The group's Seegene subsidiary has released the Seeplex HSV multiplex PCR test, which is able to detect the presence of the disease in around five hours.
It is also designed to help differentiate between type one infections, which generally lead to oral herpes, and type two cases, which concern the genital regions.
The firm said this makes the assay potentially useful in diagnosing a condition which can often be difficult to detect clinically, due to the often asymptomatic nature of infections.
According to Mast, HSV is the most common ulcerative sexually transmitted disease in the UK and affects approximately 20,000 people.
Last month, the science company launched a new three-hour PCR assay called GenoQuick MTB, which is designed to provide fast and accurate testing results for tuberculosis using a highly conserved complex specific DNA target.Other news stories from 12/04/2010
