| DoH launches campaign to raise awareness of alcohol damage | Posted on 29/01/2010 in Medical Government/ NHS related news The Department of Health (DoH) has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the damage that excessive amounts of alcohol can inflict on a person's physical wellbeing.
Several major charities, including Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation and the Stroke Association, have lent their support to the new initiative, which will cost the government a total of £6 million.
It will offer insight on the effects that excessive drinking can have on organs and is set to be launched by the public health minister Gillian Merron.
"Many of us enjoy a drink - drinking sensibly isn't a problem. But, if you're regularly drinking more than the NHS-recommended limits, you're more likely to get cancer, have a stroke or have a heart attack," Ms Merron stated.
Earlier this month, professor Ian Gilmore, head of the Royal College of Physicians, called for more to be done to curb alcoholism in the UK.Other news stories from 29/01/2010
