Abbott submits HIV test to FDA

Posted on 26/01/2010 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News

Abbott has submitted its ARCHITECT HIV/ Ag/Ab test to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for pre-market approval, it has revealed.

The assay is anticipated to be the first test available for the simultaneous detection of the combined presence of HIV antigens - proteins produced by the HIV virus - and antibodies - proteins produced by the body to fight HIV antigens.

This would allow for the early detection and ongoing monitoring of the virus, the company highlighted.

With the identification of the HIV p24 antigen, laboratories will be able to diagnose HIV infection before HIV antibodies are detected.

Michael Warmuth, senior vice-president of diagnostics at Abbott, commented: "The earlier a patient can be diagnosed, the sooner the patient can be placed into care and the better chance there is to stop further spread of the virus."

Meanwhile, Abbott revealed last week that it increased the amount of money it donated to aid operations in Haiti from $1 million (626,000 pounds) to $2.5 million.
