Slimmers ‘could earn money by losing weight’

13th January 2010

Slimmers in the UK could take advantage of a new offer that allows them to earn money from Weight Wins, in collaboration with the NHS.

A project designed to help people become healthier sees the NHS pay a £185 administration fee per patient and Weight Wins offer the slimmers an incentive payment, reported the Telegraph.

The initiative was trialled in Kent and saw 400 NHS patients and 150 private members participate.

One individual earned the maximum reward – £425 – after losing three stone 8lbs in the space of seven months and maintaining their new weight for a further six, the publication highlighted.

The project has now been expanded and the reward money increased to £1,750 for those who manage to lose ten stone in 21 months.

Last year, a report conducted by Cancer Research UK found that men are more likely to take up smoking to help them socialise and gain confidence, while women tend to do it to help them lose weight and tackle their anxiety.
