| Department of Health offers cold weather advice | Posted on 07/01/2010 in Medical Government/ NHS related news The Department of Health is offering tips to help stop people from catching a chill in the cold weather.
Advice includes having regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day - as well as eating regularly because this helps to keep energy levels raised.
"Wear several light layers of warm clothes, and if you're going outside wear boots, hats, gloves and scarves. Remember, the roads and pavements may be slippery," the department advised.
In addition, the organisation pointed out that it is sensible to carry a mobile phone if travelling during cold weather, in case of unforeseen circumstances.
The Met Office has put cold weather warnings are in place across the country and stated that the significant amounts of snow that are expected to fall in the future could lead to major transport problems in affected areas.
Earlier this week, the British Heart Foundation warned that those with pre-existing heart conditions should avoid sudden exertion when outside in cold weather.Other news stories from 07/01/2010
