This is to ensure that these individuals have a better awareness of the treatments they will be prescribing to patients, according to the British Pharmacological Society (BPS), which will be devising the new assessments, reported the Press Association.
The announcement follows research commissioned by the General Medical Council earlier this month, which discovered that pharmacists and nurses correct a significant number of mistakes made by doctors on prescriptions.
Chairman of prescribing at the BPS professor Simon Maxwell is quoted by the news provider as stating: "One of the concerns the BPS has is that there is somewhat of a culture of acceptance that medication errors happen, but they are stopped by the good actions of nurses and pharmacists."
In September, statistics from the National Patient Safety Agency showed that errors in the issuing of drugs resulted in the deaths of 37 patients and the severe harm of a further 63 in the UK in 2007.Other news stories from 15/12/2009
