According to health secretary Andy Burnham, parts of the IT scheme will be abandoned in favour of allowing individual trusts to develop their won in-house systems.
So far, the initiative, which is projected to cost around 12 billion pounds, has been criticised due to delays.
"We are discussing with our suppliers potential reductions to the scope of the systems and the cost savings that could be generated," explained Mr Burnham.
In other NHS news this week, almost 250 of the health service's patients die very year from malnourishment.
This is according to a study undertaken by health charity BAPEN, which showed that there has been a 16 per cent rise in malnutrition-related deaths in the last 12 years, the Telegraph informed. Other news stories from 08/12/2009
