| Cancer patients 'struggle with winter cold' | Posted on 08/12/2009 in Medical Government/ NHS related news People who are undergoing cancer treatment often notice the cold more and struggle to afford their winter fuel bills, a leading charity has warned.
According to Macmillan Cancer Support, people who are receiving chemotherapy tend to be more susceptible to the cold and spend more time at home because they are unable to work.
This means that they tend to have the heating on higher and for longer than the general population.
Ciaran Devane, chief executive at Macmillan Cancer Support, explained that this leads to increased fuel bills at a time when people's household income "plummets" due to taking time off work.
"Struggling with fuel bills is a situation that can very quickly spiral out of control for cancer patients and it is simply not fair," Mr Devane claimed.
"They need help from the government and they need it now."
More than 293,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK, around three-quarters of which occur in people aged 60 and over.Other news stories from 08/12/2009
