Posted on 03/12/2009 in Scientific Eppendorf has revealed the recipients of its Young European Investigators award 2009.
Oscar Fernandez-Capetillo has been bestowed with the accolade for his research about the effects of a type of endogenous DNA damage known as replicative stress (RS) on mammalian ageing.
RS, Eppendorf explains, is associated with DNA replication and prevented mainly by the ATR kinase.
Mr Fernandez-Capetillo's group of researchers developed a murine model of the Seckel syndrome, which found that high levels of RS during embryogenesis can accelerate ageing later in life.
The prize includes 15,000 euros (13,608 pounds), is awarded to a person aged 35 or younger and is decided upon by an independent committee of experts.
In related news, Eppendorf announced the winner of another of its prizes last month.
