The NHS has unveiled its first-ever TV campaign which calls for a greater number of people to donate their organs after they die.
It will be broadcast for the first time tonight (November 2nd 2009) and will be accompanied by a £3 million marketing campaign headed up by the Central Office of Information.
The feature also aims to highlight the fact that three people die every day in the UK due to organ shortages and just 27 per cent of the population have so far joined the country's donor register.
Chief executive of NHS Blood and Transplant Lynda Hamlyn stated: "Our campaign highlights the urgent need for those who believe in organ donation to act now."
This news comes after the latest installation of the Organ Donation Annual Report, which showed that during the first six months of the 2009-10 financial year, the number of transplant operations taking place rose by 5.5 per cent.
It also indicated that organ donations rose by three per cent during this timeframe.
