Posted on 30/10/2009 in Medical Government/ NHS related news The number of people being admitted to NHS hospitals in England due to obesity-related conditions has surged of late, it has been reported.
Statistics from the NHS show a 60 per cent annual rise in patients with conditions linked to obesity, representing a 360 per cent increase over the last five years.
Some of the most prevalent health problems reported include respiratory difficulties and heart problems.
Tim Straughan, head of the NHS Information Centre, commented: "The large increase in admissions for obesity reflects the growing impact that obesity has on the health of our nation as well as the demands it is placing on limited NHS resources."
He added that the figures show that people are increasingly looking to treatments such as bariatric surgery to deal with their health problems.
According to Care Quality Commission research this week, NHS hospitals often fail to pass on patients' full medical details to other foundations - something it argues could result in the incorrect prescribing of drugs.
