Unite pointed to figures which show an increase of just 0.5 per cent in the number of people being held accountable for assaulting NHS employees within the last three years, reports the BBC.
These statistics follow the announcement made in 2006 that NHS security services and the police had signed an agreement pledging to thoroughly investigate and prosecute offenders.
"The issue here is that we have a national policy and the policy is absolutely correct. What's wrong is that it's not filtering down to the employment situation or the healthcare-giving situation," the news provider quotes Karen Jennings, head of health at Unite, as stating.
In related news, the NHS needs to fully prepare itself for a surge in swine flu cases over the coming months.
This is according to Ian Dalton, head of flu planning at the organisation, who pointed out that the number infections almost doubled over the last fortnight.
