| NHS 'should be poised for swine flu surge' | Posted on 23/10/2009 in Medical Government/ NHS related news An expected surge in cases of swine flu this autumn will mean that the NHS needs to be fully prepared to handle it.
This is according to the head of flu planning at the NHS Ian Dalton, who pointed out that the number infections has almost doubled within the last week alone.
He added that a continuation of this will result in the organisation making further intensive care beds available and expanding critical care services.
Sir Liam Donaldson, the government's chief medical officer, told the BBC that the NHS will be facing a lot of pressure this winter.
He added: "The NHS has never before had a run from mid July to March and April with intensive infectious disease like this."
The BBC also reported this week that the MRSA Working Group advised the NHS to discharge patients who contract MRSA earlier than usual amid the flu season in order to free up more beds.
