DoH takes action to curb liver disease

The UK Department of Health (DoH) has announced measures to cut the rise of liver disease in the country with the forming of the new National Strategy for Liver Disease.

Additionally, a clinical director will be recruited within the coming months to head up the operation.

The DoH pointed out that liver disease is the fifth most common cause of death in England and a growth in the number of cases reported is largely due to lifestyle factors such as obesity and excessive drinking.

“By appointing a National Clinical Director, [?] we will ensure that clinical evidence and outcomes for patients are at the heart of our work to improve the quality of services to tackle liver disease,” explained health minister Ann Keen.

According to the British Liver Trust, the three major threats to an individuals’ liver are alcohol consumption, fatty liver disease and viral hepatitis.
