Nikon donates funds to Indonesian earthquake victims

12th October 2009

Nikon, manufacturer of cameras and related products, has announced that it will donate funds to organisations currently assisting with cleanup and rescue efforts in Indonesia, following an earthquake that hit the region at the end of last month.

The firm will donate a total of three million yen (21,163 pounds) to the Japanese Red Cross, which is currently working to ensure the safety of the survivors.

It will also give a further SGD$15,000 (6,786 pounds) to the Singapore Red Cross for its post-earthquake operations.

"The Nikon group would like to express its profound sympathy and condolences to the victims of the earthquake which hit Sumatra, Indonesia on September 30th 2009," the firm stated on its website.

Measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, the earthquake struck about 50 km off the coast of Sumatra.

The Guardian quoted the country’s health minister Siti Fadilah Supari as saying that thousands of people are likely to be affected, describing the earthquake as "a high-scale disaster".
