Bayer revealed this week that its researchers have been nominated for the Deutscher Zukunftspreis award - an accolade distributed by the German federal president for high achievements in technology and innovation.
The researchers in question have been working on the novel oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and are one of three teams in the running to win the accolade.
An expert panel selected what it deemed to be the most worthy submissions from numerous organisations and the winner is set to be announced by the German federal president Horst Kohler on December 2nd 2009.
Dr Wolfgang Plischke, a member of the Bayer board of management, commented: "Our Bayer team has shown that excellent research is the basis of our country's innovative strength and competitiveness."
Last week, Bayer announced that it has appointed a new chief executive officer - Dr Marijn Dekkers - who will take up the post in October 2010 when current CEO Werner Wenning is due to relinquish it.
