The DJSI features around ten per cent of the 2,500 organisations worldwide that perform the best in terms of sustainable activity.
Criteria considered for the index includes companies' work in areas such as social, economic, environmental and societal issues, as well as dialogue, innovation, supplier relationships, ethics and access to healthcare and medicines.
"This commitment has been strengthened by the creation of a corporate social responsibility department, which will play an active part in achieving Sanofi-aventis' ambition - building a global healthcare leader focused on patients' needs," explained Christopher Viehbacher, chief executive officer of the firm.
Meanwhile, Sanofi-aventis announced earlier this month that it will work with the Butantan Institute to provide a H1N1 influenza vaccine to the Brazilian government.
