Public given chance to question care services minister

Posted on 02/07/2009 in Medical Government/ NHS related news

The public was given a chance to question care services minister Phil Hope at an event in Leeds this week.

Representatives from Unison, the NHS, care sector and Age Concern/Help the Aged also attended the meeting, which was chaired Question Time-style by Sir Michael Parkinson.

It was part of the Dignity in Care campaign, which is aimed at equipping and encouraging people to improve standards and spread best practice.

Sir Michael said it was great to see the region taking the matter seriously.

"There needs to be a shift in society's attitude towards treating older people with dignity and respect," he added. "It's not just up to governments and nurses."

The television personality was quoted by the Yorkshire Post as telling the audience about the treatment his mother received while in care.

Although he encountered some "wonderful" nurses, he was forced to complain about the services.

Meanwhile, earlier this week saw the Department of Health announce the results of its GP Patient Survey, which found that overall satisfaction reached 91 per cent.
