Posted on 29/06/2009 in Pharmacy Supplier News Johnson & Johnson has discussed a study that shows girls are more confident if they wear contact lenses rather than glasses.
In the largest investigation of its kind, a total of 484 youngsters aged between eight and 11 were randomly assigned to wear either spectacles or lenses for three years.
Dr Mitchell J Prinstein, co-author of the study, noted how adolescent females were more susceptible to suffer from low self-esteem compared to males of their age.
He added these feelings were emphasised further if they wore frames.
"Girls are particularly vulnerable to social and psychological distress ? and this data suggests that for girls ? a switch from glasses to contact lenses may result in an improvement in self-perception," Dr Prinstein stated.
In conclusion, he asserted the examination reveals how a simple intervention such as switching vision aids can help boost confidence during this particular stage of development.
