| DoH advises people how to stay cool during heatwave | Posted on 29/06/2009 in Medical Government/ NHS related news The Department of Health (DoH) is advising the public how to stay cool and safe over the coming days after the Met Office released a heatwave warning.
On Monday and Tuesday (June 29th and 30th), there is a 60 per cent risk of temperatures in some areas reaching up to 32 degrees C, with London, the east of England, south-west, south-east and the midlands being the regions likely to be the most affected.
Those with serious illnesses, older people and young children could suffer the worst. Healthcare and social services will be working to help reduce the danger that could arise.
A DoH spokesperson advised trying to keep the home as cool as possible and remembering the needs of friends and family who could be at risk.
"The elderly and those who are ill are particularly vulnerable during hot weather and the most oppressive conditions occur in our towns and cities," the representative said.
Other recommendations from the government body include to shade windows, avoid the heat between 11:00 and 15:00 BST, drink cold fluids and sleep in the coolest room of the house.
