| Future ambulances are shown at London event | Posted on 22/06/2009 in Medical Government/ NHS related news Research that aims to produce ideas for future ambulance designs has been welcomed.
At the NHS Innovation Expo, which was held in London on Friday (June 19th), a Smart Pod was on show. It combined features from current emergency vehicles with new functions.
The latest ideas included Smart Infection Control, an expandable mobile treatment centre and other innovations that exploit state of the art communications technologies.
As well as serving as a traditional ambulance, the Smart Pod also transforms into a mini therapy centre, which promises to provide fast medical assistance during emergencies or major incidents.
Professor Jonathan Benger is from the research team behind and explained the idea goes beyond current models.
"Although NHS clinical staff, such as paramedics and nurses, have the necessary skills to treat people on-the-spot, emergency vehicles have not yet evolved to provide the necessary facilities," he said.
Dave Whiting, director of East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, added his team welcomes the research and looks forward to further developments.
Staff from the public body also had the chance to see a new trolley designed to assist cardiac arrest teams at the expo.Other news stories from 22/06/2009
