Posted on 15/06/2009 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) remains committed to helping health authorities and governments respond to the emergence of the new A (H1N1) influenza virus, it has stated.
At its German and Canadian manufacturing sites, the company has begun the necessary process to develop a new vaccine for the illness.
The anti-viral medication Relenza (zanamivir) will also continue to be produced and supplied by the firm.
In order to create a preventative treatment for the new type of virus, a seed strain must first be prepared for manufacturing.
Once this process ? which can take several weeks ? is completed, GSK can begin producing the new candidate A (H1N1) influenza vaccine.
Subject to regulatory approval, the first doses are expected to be available within four to six months.
The company has offered to adapt its 50 million quantities of H5N1 pre-pandemic vaccine to the new modified protection once production begins.
Last week, GSK entered a definitive agreement with Shenzhen Neptunus Interlong Bio-Technique to develop and manufacture influenza preventative medicines for the Chinese market.Other news stories from 15/06/2009
