Medtronic looks at ways to manage sugar levels

Posted on 10/06/2009 in Medical Company Product News

Medtronic has asserted combining Personal C GM and therapy management software with an insulin pump can be an effective way to manage diabetes.

Results of a clinical trial show how this grouping is more beneficial for patients with type 1 diabetes and poor metabolic control than a conventional pump and self monitoring.

Those who used Personal C GM were over 70 per cent more likely to achieve almost a full percentage point reduction in average blood glucose levels.

Dr Francine Kaufman is the chief medical officer of Medtronic's diabetes division and noted the disease is a complicated illness.

He added devices, such as the one examined in the investigation, can help sufferers manage both short and long-term effects of the disease.

"This study reinforces the need for an integrated, management approach that uses multiple technologies to achieve significant results," stated Dr Kaufman.

Last week, Medtronic announced it plans to launch a semi-closed loop system in Europe later this summer.

The device includes a feature called Low Glucose Suspend that stops insulin delivery in diabetes patients if their blood sugar becomes too low.
