| Number of diabetes cases in under-fives set to double | Posted on 28/05/2009 in Industry related health news The number of children under the age of five with type 1 diabetes is set to double by 2020, experts warn.
A report published in The Lancet claims the number of cases will continue to increase for those under and over the age of five if present trends continue.
Type 1 diabetes is caused by insulin deficiency and represents ten per cent of the total number of diabetes cases.
Experts predicted there will be a total of 24,400 new cases in 2020, with a doubling in the number of cases in children aged under the age of five.
If present trends continue, they warn, the total number of cases in European children under the age of 15 is predicted to rise from 94,000 in 2005 to 160,000 in 2020, an increase of 70 per cent.
The authors of the study claimed the increases may be related to modern lifestyle habits, such as increased weight and height development.
They wrote: "European countries need to ensure appropriate planning of services and resources are in place to provide high-quality care for the increased numbers of children who will be diagnosed with diabetes in future years."Other news stories from 28/05/2009
