The cervical cancer vaccine has become the first of its kind to be awarded the World Health Organization (WHO) pre-qualification.
In order to meet the body's standards, the medication had to pass certain quality, safety and efficacy criteria.
Graca Machel, founder and president of the Foundation for Community Development, explained cervical cancer is a problem in many developing countries.
The approval of the vaccination is a significant milestone in protecting females and improving access to better healthcare across the world, she added.
President of Merck's vaccines and infectious diseases department Margaret G McGlynn also noted it was a crucial development.
She said: "WHO pre-qualification is an important step to enable more women in countries throughout the world to benefit from this significant advance in women's health."
Also this month, Merck began launching Tredaptive (ER niacin/laropiprant) ? a drug to treat patients with mixed dyslipidemia and primary hypercholesterolemia - in the UK and Germany. It is now approved in 39 countries across the globe.Other news stories from 27/05/2009
