Posted on 26/05/2009 in Dental Supplier News Nobel Biocare has found more than 50,000 adults have at least one tooth missing and an organisation has stressed the dangers this can cause to the individual.
A missing incisor, canine or molar can change face shape, alter jaw structure or shift the dental arrangement, according to the American Society of Implant Dentistry (AAID).
Self esteem and eating habits can also be affected, so fixing the problem has more than purely cosmetic benefits, the body added.
The research conducted by the implant manufacturer discovered 75 per cent did not know tooth loss can cause bone erosion in the jaw and a further two in three were not aware it could damage the contour of the face.
Beverly Dun, AAID president, highlighted the importance of finding a skilled professional to carry out restoration work.
"There's higher risk if the dentist has limited experience performing implant surgery," she said.
"Prospective patients should pay close attention to the dentist's training and experience before agreeing to undergo a dental implant procedure."
Earlier this month, Nobel Biocare launched its All-on-4 procedure, which it promises can help some people get all their replacement work completed in one surgery visit.Other news stories from 26/05/2009
