Posted on 22/05/2009 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News Novartis' QAB149 (indacaterol) could become the basis of a range of treatments to help people with respiratory problems, it has claimed.
Data from a number of phase III clinical trials of the investigational bronchodilator found it can improve lung function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) within five minutes of administration and last for 24 hours.
The results also indicated the long-acting beta2-agonist could significantly aid the condition ? which can be life-threatening and affects 210 million people across the world - for up to one year of taking the treatment.
At present, QAB149 is under regulatory review in the EU and the US to treat the illness that is characterised by airflow obstruction to the lungs, causing breathlessness.
Dr Trevor Mundel, global head of development at Novartis Pharma, commented: "Novartis is committed to developing a range of therapies for patients with respiratory diseases such as COPD."
Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration approved the company's Prevacid 24HR.
It is the first Proton Pump Inhibitor for the treatment of frequent heartburn that has been permitted for over-the-counter sale since 2003.Other news stories from 22/05/2009
