Sheffield NHS implements technology to help children

16th March 2009

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust has launched a new technological device to help young patients keep up to date with their school work.

Already installed on six wards, the Patient Interactive System enables hospital teachers and play specialists to assist children who are spending time in hospital with their education.

The integrated, interactive system also permits medics to access patient records at the side of the bed. As a result, money and time is freed so staff can give more attention to youngsters.

Russell Banks, head of IT at the hospital, explained the solution will make a large difference in the way files are kept if it is rolled out nationally.

He commented: “Other benefits include the reduction of the endless administrative paper trail, freeing up revenue which can be invested into other areas of improving patient care.”

So far, the Children’s Hospital Charity has already collected over £250,000 for the technology. The organisation is now looking for supporters to back the programme further.

In other news, the Yeovil District NHS Foundation Trust is due to host a meeting next Monday (March 23rd) to provide advice for women with gynaecological cancer.
