Pfizer therapy ‘reduces hsCRP levels’

3rd February 2009

Pfizer’s Lipitor therapy reduces high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels in patients who have stable coronary artery disease, a trial has revealed.

The Comparative Atorvastatin Pleiotropic study – published in Clinical Therapeutics – found after 26 weeks, subjects treated with an 80 mg dose of the product had a 55 per cent decrease of the organic compound.

Patients taking the ten mg quantity had a 21 percent reduction in levels.

Director of the hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis research group at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal and principal investigator of the trial Dr Jean Davignon said the findings support results from previous trials.

He went on to note: “Even more encouraging was the fact that further reductions in hsCRP were observed with intensive Lipitor therapy versus a lower dose.”

Founded in 1849, Pfizer employs 85,000 people in over 150 countries.

Headquartered in New York, US, the company has a research and development facility in Sandwich, UK.
