Posted on 17/11/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Financials Pfizer has announced the launch of a new research unit, named Pfizer Regenerative Medicine.
Set to build on previous scientific progress focussing on the biology of stem cells, the unit intends to discover and develop a new generation of regenerative medicines for major medical needs, with the aim of developing future treatments to prevent disability, heal degenerative diseases and repair failing organs.
The company is set to announce several scientific collaborations in the coming weeks.
Rod MacKenzie, head of Worldwide Research at Pfizer, said: "Pfizer Regenerative Medicine represents a great opportunity to focus world-class research in a field that holds considerable promise for biomedical science and for the treatment of many debilitating conditions such as diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders."
President of Pfizer?s Biotherapeutics and Bioinnovation centre, Corey Goodman, added that the unit is part of the company's aim to "be at the forefront" of research in biotherapeutics and bioinnovation, along with research in biomedical science.
Co-located in the biotech hubs of Cambridge, UK and Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States, the unit is to be led by chief scientific officer Ruth McKernan.
It is expected to expand to employ around 70 researchers and scientists, who will operate in small teams.
