Novartis set to bring "diabetes to light"

Posted on 17/11/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Financials

Novartis has announced it will light up its corporate headquarters, in collaboration with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

The partnership, in conjunction with World Diabetes Day, will be part of the federation's Monument Challenge and will see the building in Basel, Switzerland coloured blue.

Affecting 53 million people in Europe and 245 million worldwide, diabetes currently has no cure - with at least half of all people with the condition unaware they have it.

Ameet Nathwani, global head of the Cardiovascular & Metabolism Development Franchise at Novartis Pharma, said: "Diabetes presents the world with one of its greatest health challenges and is associated with many serious conditions, including cardiovascular disease."

He added: "Novartis is committed to raising the standards for type 2 diabetes treatments."

The World Diabetes Day Monument Challenge sees buildings and figures around the world lit up in blue, in an aim to highlight the cause.

Last year's event saw 279 structures lit.

Created in 1996, through the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz, Novartis employs almost 100,000 people and has operations in 140 countries.

The company increased research investments by more than $6.4 billion (4.31 billion pounds) over 2007 and is ranked number two in Fortune Magazine's World's Most Admired Companies survey in 2008.
