| Bayer to build new chlorine recycling plant | Posted on 17/11/2008 in Scientific Bayer has announced plans to build a new chlorine recycling plant at its site in Shanghai, which will ensure supply for its new 250,000 ton- per-year toluene diisocyanate facility.
The process will involve the catalytic oxidation of hydrogen chloride using oxygen, developed by Japanese company Sumitomo Chemical, which has been awarded the Green & Sustainable Chemistry Award in Japan.
In comparison to the conventional process, it allows reduction in energy consumption of over 50 per cent, Bayer said.
Peter Vanacker, head of the Polyurethanes Business Unit and member of the Executive Committee of Bayer MaterialScience, commented: "By introducing this new chlorine recycling process at Bayer MaterialScience we continue to implement the best and most innovative process technologies to strengthen our leadership position in the polyurethane industry."
The new plant is expected to come on stream in 2010.
