| Proctor and Gamble-supported study: Steroid patches can increase sex drive of postmenopausal women | Posted on 10/11/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News Proctor and Gamble has supported a study which has found that steroid patches can significantly increase the sex drive of postmenopausal women that are not using hormone replacement therapies.
Led by Monash University's professor Susan Davis, the research is the first in the world and found that loss of sexual interest was common among women after menopause, of which many instances resulted in the seeking of medical treatment.
Ms Davis said that many women do not wish to take oestrogen.
She added: "What we have found is that treatment with a patch delivering 300 micrograms (ug) of testosterone each day results in meaningful improvement in sexual function in postmenopausal women with low libido who are using no other hormone therapy."
Set to be published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the research involved 814 postmenopausal women from 65 centres in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and Sweden.
