Posted on 22/10/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Restructures Sanofi-aventis has announced it has strengthened its research and development presence in China as a result of the expansion of a facility in Shanghai and the establishment of a biometrics centre in Beijing.
In addition, the company states it has signed a partnership agreement with the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences for the discovery of treatments for cancer, diabetes and neurological diseases.
The firm says the expansion will allow for the rapid growth of clinical programmes and aims to encompass activities ranging late-stage clinical trials to drug-target identification.
Senior vice-president of Sanofi-aventis research and development, Dr Marc Cluzel, states: "We have found a welcoming environment and a huge talent pool in China to expand our research and development activities.
"Diversity and cross fertilisation allow exploring new avenues of research and strategic alliances are the way to remain at the cutting edge in therapeutic expertise and innovation."
Senior vice-president of Sanofi-Pasteur research and development, Dr Michel DeWilde, adds a "comprehensive" vaccine development programme is already underway in China and that the company is looking forward to its expansion in the future.
