DoH announces appointment of health researchers

Posted on 06/10/2008 in Medical Government/ NHS related news

The Department of Health (DoH) has announced the appointment of researchers to lead the way in health and social care research.

It said a directory listing of 100 of the top scientists in these areas has been published by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The directory lists senior investigators who have been picked to help those making significant contributions to health research that is both patient and people-focused.

The DoH added these investigators will also give new leadership to the NIHR faculty, while acting as ambassadors for the institute and offering expert advice to its director.

Prime minister Gordon Brown said: "I want Britain to lead the world in beating the diseases which cause such heartbreak for families."

He added the last few years have seen major research breakthroughs in a number of diseases, including Alzheimer's, cancer, Parkinson's and strokes, but added these have yet to be transformed into treatments for patients.

Last month, the DoH announced the opening of a new research fellowship scheme to boost NHS science.

In total, the government pledged to provide four million pounds in funding over the next three years to support the health initiative.
