| Bayer reports progress for ricociguat | Posted on 06/10/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News Bayer Schering Pharma has announced the publication of positive phase II results for ricociguat (BAY 63-2521), a compound being assessed as a new approach for the treatment of varying forms of pulmonary hypertension.
The study data was presented during a satellite symposium at the annual congress of the European Respiratory Society in Berlin, Germany.
Riociguat is a soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) stimulator and is the first member of a new class of vasodilating agents.
In the phase II study, the compound showed significantly improved exercise capacity in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension compared to baseline levels.
The company said the phase III programmes for the drug in these indications will begin later this year.
Kemal Malik, head of global development and member of the executive committee of Bayer HealthCare, said: "Riociguat has the potential to overcome limitations of current standards of care in pulmonary hypertension."
He added the company is expanding into areas of unmet medical need, with riociguat being an example of a new approach to the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
