DoH launches world health strategy

Posted on 01/10/2008 in Medical Government/ NHS related news

The Department of Health (DoH) has announced the launch of a new strategy which outlines the method by which the government will work with a number of international bodies, including the EU and the World Health Organisation.

Supported by 12 million pounds of funding over the next five years, the Health is Global strategy aims to highlight major challenges to global health faced by the UK and the rest of the world while providing set actions of response.

It encompasses ten principles which set out aspirations for consideration across government departments when dealing with both domestic and foreign policy that could potentially affect the issue of global healthcare.

The strategy also includes five areas for action.

These are health security, strong and fair health systems, effective international health organisations, freer and fairer trade and a strengthening of the development and use of evidence to boost policy and practice.

Alan Johnson, health minister, said: "This strategy sets out a clear course of action for the way we will work with others - both nationally and internationally - to improve the health of the world's population, including that of the UK."

He added health is a global issue that transcends national borders and boundaries.

In February 2007, the government announced a one million pound boost to help alleviate the shortages of doctors and nurses in the developing world.
