| Eli Lilly to disclose physician payments | Posted on 26/09/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Restructures As part of its ongoing transformation efforts, Eli Lilly has announced plans to become the first pharmaceutical research company to disclose the payments it makes to physicians.
From the second half of 2009, the company will launch an online registry of physician payments which will be available to the public.
Individuals will be able to search the payments to physicians who serve Eli Lilly as advisers and speakers, with this being extended in 2011 to resemble the legislation included in the Sunshine Act.
The Physician Payments Sunshine Act aims to establish a national registry of payments made to physicians by pharmaceutical and medical companies in the US and has been endorsed by Eli Lilly.
It has not yet been passed by congress.
John Lechleiter, president and chief executive officer of the company, said: "With each of our industry firsts, from launching our clinical trials registry to the public reporting of educational grants, Lilly is striving to be a leader in improving transparency across our industry."
He added letting members of the public see for themselves what the company is doing is the best method to build up trust.
Last month, Eli Lilly completed its acquisition of SGX Pharmaceuticals, a San Diego-based biotechnology company focused on oncology.Other news stories from 26/09/2008
