Earlier this week, shadow health minister Jonathan Moorgan called on health minister Edwina Hart to confirm or deny redundancies are planned following restructuring.
The Western Mail reports consultation has already taken place on plans to reduce the number of local health boards (LHBs) from 22 to eight, while further talks are said to be planned to merge the boards with NHS trusts.
In a letter to Mrs Hart, Mr Morgan said: "While we welcome the reduction in the number of LHBs, which we have argued for since their creation, it is simply not right to leave NHS workers with an axe hanging over them."
He added the minister should "be straight" with both the public and employees in question and publish information of hear plans.
A Welsh assembly spokesperson responded by saying the health minister holds regulator meetings with workforce representatives to keep them up to date on plans to restructure the NHS, while trade union representatives are also working in conjunction with the assembly in these efforts.
Last month, a report published in the Lancet revealed Wales has the lowest five-year survival rate in the UK for all cancers studied.Other news stories from 20/08/2008
