| Elan and Wyeth announce 'encouraging' bapineuzumab results | Posted on 18/06/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News Elan and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals have announced preliminary data from the phase II clinical study of bapineuzumab (AAB-001) in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease.
While in the overall study population the study did not achieve statistical significance on its primary efficacy endpoints, the companies state that post-hoc analyses reveal clinically meaningful and statistically significant benefits in key subgroups.
Specifically, these benefits on key efficacy endpoints were seen in non-carriers of the Apolipoprotein E4 allele, which is estimated to be 40 to 70 per cent of the population with Alzheimer's disease.
Elan said the overall results of the trial support the prior decision to start phase III trials of the compound, while the safety and efficacy findings support the design of the phase III programme.
Kelly Martin, president and chief executive officer of Elan, said: "The preliminary analyses of the phase II study are a continued validation of the amyloid approach to Alzheimer's disease."
He added that they are a key milestone in the companies dedication to bring new treatment options to patients for this indication.
In December 2007, Elan and Wyeth initiated four phase III studies of bapineuzumab in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease patients with co-primary efficacy endpoints.Other news stories from 18/06/2008
