| AstraZeneca signs diabetes and obesity agreement | Posted on 18/06/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News AstraZeneca has announced that it has signed a strategic research collaboration with Columbia University Medical Centre for the development of innovative treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The bodies will also develop therapeutics for a secondary focus on dyslipidaemia - abnormal blood lipid levels and atherosclerosis - a hardening of the arteries.
Research in preclinical and clinical stages will centre on the discovery of mechanisms and biological targets for intervention and will potentially result in the development of commercially viable treatments for these conditions.
AstraZeneca notes that the diseases covered by the agreement are significant risk factors for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
Jan Lundberg, executive vice-president of discovery and research at AstraZeneca, said: "AstraZeneca is determined to be a significant contributor to the resolution of the health problems that stem from the pandemic of diabetes and obesity.
"Columbia University Medical Centre has outstanding expertise and skills in discovery research, as well as in translational science."
He added that the company is excited to be collaborating with a distinguished and like-minded partner that shares its dedication to the pursuit of innovative medical solutions in areas of unmet need.
