| Sanofi-Aventis reports non-inferiority of Apidra | Posted on 10/06/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News Sanofi-Aventis has announced the results of a new study showing Apidra to be non-inferior to insulin lispro in terms of efficacy as part of a basal-bolus treatment regimen in type 1 diabetes patients aged four to 17-years old.
Apidra is a rapid-acting insulin analogue with a unique molecular structure that is zinc-free that maintains a short duration of action and rapid onset.
The compound was compared to Lantus (insulin glargine) taken once daily or NPH twice-daily as basal insulin, with a similar safety profile also observed.
More patients in the trial taking Apidra, especially adolescents, reached their age-specific target for HbA1c from the American Diabetes Association, compared to those taking Lispro.
"The efficacy and safety of Apidra is the confirmed option to be used with once-daily basal insulin Lantus in the basal-bolus regimen," Sanofi-Aventis said.
"Moreover, Lantus SoloStar and Apidra SoloStar being the safe, reliable and accurate devices for people with diabetes contributes to this choice."
In March 2007, Sanofi-Aventis announced the European launch of its SoloStar disposable insulin pens for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes following its approval from the European Commission.Other news stories from 10/06/2008
