UCB initiates cold-chain storage for Neupro

5th June 2008

A transdermal patch manufactured by UCB Pharmaceuticals is the subject of a recent statement from the group, which said it is implementing a full cold-chain storage system for the product.

Neupro (rotigone) is used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease in adult and elderly sufferers, and UCB said it will not be distributing it to new patients but instead prioritising the supply for existing recipients.

UCB is to submit a variation to the European Medicines Evaluation Agency to implement the cold-chain system, as this was found to “substantially” reduce crystal development on the patch.

Crystallisation resulting from the manufacturing process can theoretically decrease the patch’s clinical efficacy and alter its visual appearance.

Until it is made available again to new patients in Europe, UCB said Neupro should be stored in the refrigerator, but not the freezer.

“I want to emphasise that the issue is not one of product contamination or toxicity,” explained Dr Iris Loew-Friedrich, chief medical officer of the group.

“Even if they notice crystals on their patch, it is important that patients do not stop taking their existing medication without speaking to their doctor.”
