GlaxoSmithKline announces positive data for chemotherapy drug

30th May 2008

GlaxoSmithKline has announced new data from a pair of phase III trials for Rezonic/Zunrisa (casopitant).

The data showed that the investigational NK-1 receptor antagonist induced a significant and clinically-meaningful reduction in the number of patients suffering from nausea and vomiting as a result of chemotherapy.

Study investigator Dr Steven Grunberg, of the Vermont Cancer Centre at the University of Vermont, explains that many people are affected by the side effects of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in spite of standard dual therapy.

GlaxoSmithKline notes that up to 40 – 50 per cent of chemotherapy patients on anti-emetic treatment continue to suffer from it.

Dr Grunberg adds: “Since it is important to make patients as comfortable as possible, I consider these results for casopitant as a very exciting step toward a convenient and effective oral option to provide much needed relief.”

The firm recently announced at its annual general meeting that all proposed resolutions were passed by its shareholders.
