| GlaxoSmithKline receives Advair 250/50 approval | Posted on 01/05/2008 in Pharmaceutical Company Product News GlaxoSmithKline has received formal approval for the use of Advair Diskus 250/50, its treatment for the reduction of exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the company has announced.
The drug is the first to be approved for this type of treatment by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA).
It will be used to treat people with a history of exacerbations, episodes of worsening COPD symptoms such as coughing up excess mucus or shortness of breath that in many cases require additional treatment or hospitalisation.
Some 77 per cent of COPD patients say they have experienced at least one exacerbation in the past year.
Gary Ferguson MD of the Pulmonary Research Institute of Southeast Michigan said the approval was "good news" for COPD sufferers.
"My goal as a physician is to help reduce the number of exacerbations my patients experience and Advair 250/50 will be a critical treatment in helping meet that goal," he added.
According to the World Health Organisation, around 210 million people worldwide currently suffer from COPD.
