Pfizer claims Lyrica cuts fibromyalgia pain
The combined results of recent clinical studies have revealed a treatment for pain relief in fibromyalgia patients has been effective across a range of sufferers.
It is reported that Pfizer’s Lyrica product was not only able to successfully ease the pain suffered by a number of fibromyalgia patients, but did so regardless of whether or not they had previously experienced anxiety or depression relating to the condition.
According to Dr Lesley Arnold, associate psychiatry professor and one of the report’s authors, the alleviation of pain had a further positive affect on the overall well-being of the subjects studied.
“Many patients with a chronic pain condition such as fibromyalgia also experience depression and anxiety and importantly we found that Lyrica helped reduce pain in patients – regardless of the presence of symptoms of these co-morbid conditions,” he said.
The results of the study pooled data from a number of previous trials and noted improvements in symptoms of fatigue as well as anxiety and depression.
A recent feature for US News & World Report said that fibromyalgia is “often misunderstood” and added that there is currently “no definitive test” to prove if someone suffers from it.
